Gujarati as an additional language, Standards 1 to 8

The Gujarat Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Gujarati Language Act, 2023 (Gujarat Act No. 4 of 2023) requires Gujarati to be taught as a compulsory additional language in all schools in the state. Its definition of a school includes schools in Gujarat affiliated to any board, so CBSE, ICSE and international schools are covered as well as state board schools.

Schools that were not teaching Gujarati had to introduce it from the first standard in the 2023–24 academic year and extend it, in phases, up to the eighth standard. That span runs from Class 1 to Class 8.

If your family has moved to Gujarat

The Act allows an exemption: students domiciled outside Gujarat who are studying at a school in Gujarat may be exempted from all or any of its provisions, and the exemption is granted by the school the student attends. If you have moved to Ahmedabad from another state, ask your child’s school how it handles this before assuming Gujarati is required.

Where eGunas can help

eGunas does not teach Gujarati. It teaches Mathematics, Science, English, Hindi and Social Studies to CBSE students, and Mathematics, Science, English, and History & Civics to ICSE students, one to one and online.

For a school following the Gujarat board, where the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board in Gandhinagar conducts the SSC examination at the end of Class 10, confirm the syllabus before booking. eGunas State Board courses cover Mathematics, Science and Social Studies, but the catalogue does not name which state boards they follow; ask at the free demo class.
